OCTOPUS ENERGY HACK DAY

In May 2018 we fielded a team of UX and Service Designers to attend Octopus Energy’s ‘OctoHack’ event. There focus was on new ways to use their Agile tariff API.

Unlike most of the teams competing, we met as strangers that day. We left as winners, with our proposition to put hybrid heat pumps into social housing.

The Challenge

Octopus invited teams to their Hack Day in February 2018. Teams competed using the Agile Tariff API to tackle the challenges of decarbonisation.

Teams from Tesla, National Grid and Toshiba hacked future products and services. Each chose a problem to attack and had a day to create a rapid prototype to show a judging panel.

Outcomes

We forged a dream-team with Daikin and PassivSystems to design a fuel-switching technology for heat pumps called ‘Chameleon’.

Chameleon scooped the top-prize of the day for ‘Biggest Impact’ from a judging panel that included Tesla, Google, National Grid and James Heappey MP.

Our solution used renewable electricity to heat social housing at prices as low as, or lower than, gas.
