LOCAL ENERGY: IS SMALL BEAUTIFUL?

CLIENT: Prospering from the Energy Revolution Integration Service

Government is investing £100m in smart local energy system innovation projects from 2019-22. The aim is to create high value jobs providing cleaner, cheaper renewable energy.

‘Local energy’ sits at the heart of many of these projects. The concept is that communities can start to trade their energy, manage the grid and buy energy as a service.

We used HomeTruths® to find out what consumers thought of the idea.

The Result

Many consumers liked the idea that local energy schemes would save them money and reduce emissions. Some needed convincing that local schemes would be reliable. There were also concerns about losing control of appliances, heating or electric vehicles. People wanted to be sure that they could still get what they wanted from their energy (e.g. comfort or mobility).

Future trials will show how consumers find these experiences in real life.
